What’s In a Name - The Background Behind Gordian Key Forge

One of the questions I get asked often is – “Where does Gordian Key Forge come from?” I’m here to explain the history that led to my name and how it relates to what I love to make – knives!

Over 2300 years ago, an ancient oracle prophesized that whoever could unravel the Gordian knot would rule all of Asia. Many men attempted to untie the intricate knot and failed. One day, a young man named Alexander the Great accepted the challenge, however taking a bold and unique approach. With a slice of his sword, a Greek Kopis, he cut open the knot with ease and the legend of "The Gordian Knot" was born. As prophesized, he then became the ruler of Asia by conquering all of Greece to the borders of India, encompassing the Achaemenid Persian Empire and beyond. Therefore, the key that finally unlocked the legendary knot was the blade of a bold warrior!

As a huge fan of history, I knew I wanted to involve that in my name somehow. The legend of the Gordian Knot involves creativity, strength and unconventional thinking, which is what the process of learning to bladesmith has been like. Since I started my journey, there have been countless challenges that my unique and out-of-the-box thinking have helped me overcome. My goal is to create products that are strong, highly custom and will stand out from other knives out there. The name Gordian Key Forge encompasses the daily problem solving and bold and creative approach I take when making knives and swords. I also bring this into my logo which is a play on the Gordian Knot and my love of knives.

Thanks for stopping by and stay sharp folks!
